It was a very hard wakeup for my first-grader, but once she was up, she was ready to go. It helped that I surprised her with a Stuff You Should Know podcast (her #1 request for the last 6 months) about porta potties, which she thought was hilarious. Because poop.
Good start to the new year. Weird to say that I’m happy to be back to work, but here I am.

Tuesday is our first day, but it’s a half day, which is the stupidest invention since schools were created. Nothing gets done in a half day. So we took the extra day and are driving back to Texas today and Tuesday. She’ll start Wednesday.

Our district used to have a smattering of short days throughout the year. I hated them. Now they’ve gone from counting teaching days to counting teaching hours (this might be a statewide thing). The result is actually a bit more time off, with a full week at both Thanksgiving and Spring. Since my wife works for the university, she’s been off the last two weeks also, and went back today. We’re fortunate that we all get so much time off together.

When I was teaching, I had a 12-month appointment, so I didn’t get all the days off that most teachers received. You would think that it would have included a commensurate bump in pay, but you would be wrong. Same pay, more hours, unhappy employee. That’s one of the many reasons I now work in the private sector.

My old school system loved to mix in the weekends with the holidays and count those days too as vacation. So We would go until end of Tuesday for thanksgiving and be back monday. If New Years was on a Tuesday, we would start Thursday. Buncha crap, I say, but that’s what they do I guess when starting the year Tuesday after laborday.

Yep, I’m back at it too. My new classes are ... well ... lets just say I’m going to have to do a lot more work this semester.

Yeah, I think it’s the counting of days. Still, I paid a bit of money, and I want my money’s worth. There should be tests on those days.

Yeah, the math they do is arcane and opaque to me.
